Site Homepage Book Frontmatter Book Resources

Vedāṅga Jyotiṣa is one of the six Vedāṅgas, the ancient Indian texts dedicated to the study of Vedic ritual and astronomy. Traditionally attributed to the sage Lagadha, it presents rules for calculating the lunar and solar calendars, fixing festivals, and predicting eclipses using early astronomical concepts and tabular methods.

The text is one of the earliest surviving works of Indian astronomy and serves as a practical handbook for Vedic priests. Its compact Sanskrit verses describe the motion of the sun and moon, the rules for intercalary months, and the determination of auspicious timings for rituals.
